When to Divide Peonies: A Step-by-Step Fall Guide

by Marie Schweitzer

Do you have a mature peony that has outgrown its spot—or simply want more of those gorgeous, old-fashioned blooms? Fall is generally the best time to divide herbaceous peonies.

Dividing peonies isn't difficult, but timing and planting depth matter. Done properly, dividing an established plant gives you the opportunity to grow new peonies for other spots in the garden, share them with friends, or rejuvenate a crowded planting.

And honestly, I love doing this kind of work in fall. There's something wonderfully hopeful about planting a dormant perennial and knowing that, come spring, little red shoots will be pushing their way through the soil.

Let's walk through when to divide peonies, what you'll need, and how to do it step by step.

Why Fall Is the Best Time to Divide Peonies

The best time to divide herbaceous peonies is generally late summer through fall, after the foliage begins to die back but while the soil is still workable.

By this point, the plant has finished its big spring and summer show. Its growth is slowing down, making fall a practical time to lift, divide, and replant established roots.

Fall division also gives newly divided peonies time to begin establishing before winter arrives.

Why not divide peonies in Spring?

You can divide peonies in spring, but it's generally not the preferred time. Spring is when peonies are waking up and putting energy into new stems, leaves, and flower buds.

Moving or dividing them then can cause additional stress and may affect flowering.

Fall is usually a better choice because the plant is naturally winding down for the season. You'll also have a clearer view of the root crown once the foliage has died back.

When Should You Divide Peonies?

For many gardeners, September through October is a useful starting point, although the ideal timing depends on your climate and when the foliage begins to die back.

In colder climates, divide early enough in fall to give the roots time to settle before the ground freezes. In milder regions, the window may extend later into the season.

Rather than relying entirely on the calendar, pay attention to your plant. Once the foliage begins to yellow or die back naturally, it's usually a good sign that your peony is winding down for the year.

One other thing to keep in mind: peonies don't need to be divided simply because they're mature. They can grow happily in the same spot for many years. Divide yours when you want to propagate it, move it, or address crowding—not just because it has reached a certain age.

Note: This guide focuses on herbaceous peonies, the familiar perennials that die back to the ground each winter. Tree peonies have woody stems and aren't divided in quite the same way.

How to Divide Peonies: A Step-by-Step Tutorial

Don't let the idea of digging up a large, established peony intimidate you. It can take a little muscle, but the process is straightforward once you understand what you're looking for.

What You'll Need

A sharp garden spade or shovel
A clean, sharp knife
Garden gloves
Water
Compost, if needed to improve your soil
Plant labels, especially if you're dividing several varieties
A new planting location, if you're making extra divisions

Step 1: Cut Back the Foliage

Once the foliage has died back, cut the stems down close to the ground.

Remove the old foliage from the garden rather than leaving piles of it around your plants. This gives you a clean working area and helps tidy the garden before winter.

Avoid cutting back healthy, green foliage too early. Allowing the plant to finish its growing season gives it time to store energy in its roots.

Step 2: Dig Up the Peony

Start digging several inches away from the crown of the plant.

Peony roots can be surprisingly large and tough, especially on an older plant, so don't rush this part. Work your shovel around the plant and gradually loosen the soil.

Try to lift as much of the root clump intact as possible rather than chopping through it unnecessarily. On a very large plant, you may need to work your way around the root system several times before you can lift it from the ground.

Once the clump is free, lift it carefully and move it to a suitable spot where you can examine the roots.

Step 3: Brush Away the Soil

Gently remove enough soil to see the crown and roots. You can rinse away some of the remaining soil with water if that makes the structure easier to see.

Look for healthy roots attached to the crown, along with the small pink or reddish buds known as eyes. These eyes are the growing points that will produce next year's stems.

Take your time here. Understanding where the eyes are will help you make better divisions and avoid cutting through important growing points.

Step 4: Divide the Root Crown

Using a clean, sharp knife, carefully cut the crown into sections.

Each division should have healthy roots and preferably three to five eyes. Larger divisions with several healthy eyes often establish more readily than very small pieces, although smaller divisions can grow successfully with proper care.

Remove any damaged, rotten, or obviously unhealthy sections as you work.

Don't worry if your divisions aren't perfectly symmetrical. The goal is to create healthy pieces with viable roots and growing points—not identical little packages.

If the crown is especially large and difficult to cut, work slowly and make deliberate cuts rather than forcing the knife through the roots.

Step 5: Choose a Good Planting Location

Before replanting, take a moment to choose the right spot.

Peonies flower best with plenty of sunlight, ideally around six or more hours per day. They also need well-drained soil. Avoid low areas where water collects, especially during winter.

If your soil is heavy or compacted, improve the planting area before you put the divisions back in the ground. Compost can help improve soil structure, but avoid creating a small pocket of rich amended soil surrounded by poorly draining ground.

Give each plant enough room to grow to its mature size. Good spacing allows air to circulate around the foliage and gives the roots room to establish.

Step 6: Replant Your Peony Divisions at the Right Depth

Here's one of the most important peony-growing tips: don't plant peony eyes too deeply.

Position each division so the eyes sit approximately 1–2 inches below the soil surface, with the shallower end of that range generally appropriate in warmer climates and the deeper end often used in colder regions.

Planting too deeply is a common reason peonies produce plenty of healthy foliage but few or no flowers.

Spread the roots naturally in the planting hole, backfill with soil, and gently firm it around the roots. Water thoroughly to settle the soil and eliminate large air pockets.

Resist the temptation to bury the crown deeply for extra winter protection. Correct planting depth is much more important than adding a thick layer of soil over the eyes.

Step 7: Water and Let the Plants Settle In

After planting, water your new divisions thoroughly.

Keep the soil reasonably moist while the roots establish, but don't let it become waterlogged. Peonies prefer good drainage, particularly during the cooler, wetter months.

In colder climates, a light winter mulch may help protect newly planted divisions from repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Avoid piling heavy mulch directly over the crown, and remove or thin it in spring as appropriate for your climate.

Then comes the hardest part: being patient.

Your newly divided peonies may not put on a spectacular flower show the following spring. They may need a couple of growing seasons to establish and return to their full flowering potential.

Give them time before deciding that something has gone wrong.

Helpful Tips for Dividing Peonies

Choose a Sunny Spot

Peonies generally flower best with six or more hours of sunlight each day. A little afternoon shade can be helpful in particularly hot climates, but too much shade often results in fewer blooms.

Good drainage is equally important. Peonies don't enjoy sitting in soggy soil, especially during winter.

Don't Plant the Eyes Too Deeply

I know I've already mentioned this, but it's worth repeating. If your peony produces lots of healthy foliage but refuses to bloom, planting depth is one of the first things I'd check.

Keep those eyes close to the soil surface, and avoid burying the crown under a deep layer of mulch.

Don't Overwater

Water newly divided peonies well at planting time, then monitor the soil as they establish.

The goal is consistent moisture without saturated soil. Heavy, poorly drained ground can cause root problems, so address drainage before planting if necessary.

Be Patient About Blooms

A newly divided peony may need a couple of seasons to really hit its stride.

It's tempting to worry when the first spring is underwhelming, but resist the urge to dig it up and move it again. Give those roots time to settle in and establish a strong foundation.

Label Your Divisions

If you've divided several peony varieties, label them before you walk away from the garden.

Future-you will be very grateful when you can remember which pink, white, red, or fragrant variety is planted where.

A simple weather-resistant label can save a surprising amount of guesswork later.

Share Them With a Gardening Friend

This might be my favorite part of dividing peonies.

If your mature plant has produced a generous root clump, you may end up with more divisions than you need. Plant one in a new garden bed, give one to a friend, or share a division with someone who has always admired your peonies.

It's a lovely way to pass along a plant that can live for decades.

And if you're looking for new varieties to add to your garden, sharing plants is a wonderful reminder of what makes gardening special: there's always something to learn, grow, and pass along.

What to Expect After Dividing Peonies

Don't be discouraged if your newly divided peony looks a little unimpressive at first.

Unlike fast-growing annuals, peonies take their time. The plant is busy establishing its root system beneath the soil, and that work isn't always visible above ground.

With the right planting depth, adequate sunlight, good drainage, and a little patience, your divisions can grow into beautiful flowering plants.

If your peony doesn't bloom the following spring, don't immediately assume you've done something wrong. Establishment takes time, and planting depth, light, and growing conditions can all affect flowering.

A Few Final Thoughts on Dividing Peonies

If you have an established peony that's getting crowded, or you'd simply love to grow more of a favorite variety, fall is an excellent opportunity to give it some attention.

Dividing peonies in fall lets you propagate a beloved perennial, create new plants for your garden, and share one of the most cherished old-fashioned flowers with friends and family.

Wait until the foliage begins to die back, prepare your planting spots, and don't be afraid of those big roots. With a little care—and a little patience—you can turn one mature peony into several beautiful plants.

And next spring, when those first peony shoots emerge from the soil, you'll be glad you did.
